Zwei Stunden mit Prof. Hess-Luettich

Ich wartete auf den Professor in der Lobby lesend. Er war noch auf dem Weg.

Einige Weile später kamen Leute in die Lobby rein. Da war ein Europäer unter den Leuten. Er sah mich und ich sah ihn auch. Dann lächelte er und nannte meinen Namen. Daher wusste ich, dass er der Professor ist, auf den ich gerade wartete. Das fand ich schön, dass der Professor mich gleich erkennen konnte. Wir haben uns vorher noch nicht gesehen. :-)

Ich stand auf, gab dem Professor die Hand. Wir begrüssten einander und unterhielten uns kurz. Dann lud er mich zum Abendessen ein. Oh, er war ja so nett. Das hab ich nicht gedacht. Dann gingen wir ins Restaurant rechts neben der Lobby.

Wir sprachen über einige interessante Themen. Der Professor schenkte mir eine Flasche kayu putih Ӧl, das aus Buru Insel kommt. (kayu = Holz, putih = weiss, also kayu putih = weisses Holz. Aber es muss einen lateinischen Namen fuer diese Pflanze geben ) Darüber habe ich mich sehr gefreut. Das war ja ein schöner Abend, aber die Zeit ging weiter, irgendwann muss man ja aufhören. Wir müssen unser eigenes Leben weiterführen. Der Professor musste am nächsten Tag nach Indien weiterfliegen, wo er Vorträge auch halten wurde. Schon wieder ein langer Flug! In Jakarta war der Professor nur kurz wegen der Zwischenlandung. Vorher hatte er Vorträge in 2 Städten in Indonesien gehalten.

Ich kenne Prof. em. Dr. Dr. Dr. h.c. Ernest W.B. Heß-Lüttich seit 2003. Damals wollte ich mich um Stipendium von der Schweiz bewerben und ich brauchte eine Betreuungszusage von einer erkannten Universität in der Schweiz. Die Betreuungszusage bekam ich von Prof. Hess-Luettich, vom Institut für Germanistik der Universität Bern. Dank seiner Betreuungszusage konnte ich mich damals um das Stipendium bewerben.

Sambil membaca saya menunggu kedatangan pak profesor di lobby. Beliau masih dalam perjalanan.

Beberapa saat kemudian ada beberapa orang datang ke lobby. Di antara mereka ada seorang Eropa. Ia melihat saya dan saya juga melihatnya. Kemudian ia tersenyum dan menyebut nama saya. Mengertilah saya bahwa beliaulah profesor yang sedang saya tunggu. Senang rasanya karena pak profesor dapat langsung mengenali saya. Padahal sebelumnya kami belum pernah berjumpa. :-)

Saya berdiri dan menjabat tangan pak profesor. Kami berbincang-bincang sebentar. Kemudian beliau mengundang saya makan malam. Oh, beliau baik sekali. Saya tidak menyangka. Lalu kami pergi ke restoran di sebelah kanan lobby.

Kami bercakap-cakap mengenai beberapa tema yang menarik. Pak profesor kemudian memberi saya sebuah hadiah yaitu sebotol minyak kayu putih dari Pulau Buru. Saya senang sekali. Acara makan malam bersama pak profesor memang menyenangkan, tetapi waktu berjalan terus, suatu saat orang harus berhenti. Kami harus melanjutkan hidup kami masing-masing. Pak profesor harus melanjutkan perjalanan ke India pada keesokan harinya. Di sana beliau juga akan memberi kuliah. Lagi-lagi penerbangan yang lama! Di Jakarta pak profesor hanya sebentar karena pesawatnya memang harus transit. Sebelumnya beliau telah memberi kuliah di 2 kota di Indonesia.

Saya kenal Prof. em. Dr. Dr. Dr. h.c. Ernest W.B. Heß-Lüttich sejak 2003. Waktu itu saya ingin mengajukan diri untuk mendapatkan beasiswa dari Swiss dan saya memerlukan konfirmasi dari sebuah universitas yang diakui di Swiss, bahwa saya telah diterima di universitas tersebut. Konfirmasi ini saya dapat dari Prof. Hess-Luettich, Jurusan Studi Jerman, Universitas Bern. Berkat konfirmasi dari beliau maka saya dapat mengajukan diri untuk mendapatkan beasiswa tsb.

I was reading while waiting for the professor in the lobby. He was still on the way.

Several times later some people just came into the lobby. It was a European man among them. He saw me and I also saw him. Then he smiled at me and mentioned my name. Therefore I knew that he was the professor, whom I was waiting for. I thought it nice, that the professor could recognize me right away. We haven’t met each other yet before. :-)

I stood up, shook hands with the professor. We talked shortly. Then he invited me for dinner. Oh, he was so nice. I didn’t expect it. We went to the restaurant right beside the lobby.

We talked about some interesting themes. The professor gave me a bottle of kayu putih oil, which comes from Buru Island. (kayu = wood, putih = white, so kayu putih = white wood. But, there must be a Latin name for this plant.) I was pleased so much about the oil. It was a pleasant evening, but time went on, sometime one must stop. We must go on our own life. The professor must fly to India on the next day where he also would give lectures. Again a long flight! The professor was only shortly in Jakarta due to stopover. He had given lectures before in 2 cities in Indonesia.

I know Prof. em Dr. Dr. Dr. h.c Ernest W.B. Heß-Lüttich since 2003. I would apply for a scholarship from Switzerland at that time and I needed a confirmation of acceptance from a recognized university in Switzerland. I got the confirmation of acceptance from Prof. Hess-Luettich, German Department, University of Berne. Thanks to his confirmation of acceptance I could apply for the scholarship.

Scholarship

Studying in Germany is maybe a dream of some people. The fact is: some people can financially afford to do that, however there are lots of people who financially cannot afford that. They need scholarship. However, it is also not easy to get scholarship. There are some requirements to be fulfilled.

As I worked for DAAD* Jakarta, 1995 - 1996, I had no chance to apply for a scholarship from DAAD. The scholarship was determined for university lecturers, especially from state universities and private universities, which had the status of "disamakan", and for researchers from governmental institutions. However it is not useless to check whether DAAD extends its scholarship scope. Maybe you have chance to apply for a scholarship from DAAD.

Thanks to the modern technology you can further seek so many information on scholarship in internet.

Not only in Germany, you can also study in Austria and Switzerland, because they are German speaking countries. However in Switzerland there are certain regions, where people speak German.

In Autumn 2003 German time I applied for a scholarship from the Embassy of Switzerland, Jakarta. Its scholarship was more restricted than DAAD scholarship. If DAAD Jakarta offered the scholarship to the whole Indonesia, Switzerland offered it only to regions, which involved some countries. It means Indonesia get only a few percent of the whole portion. Further, it means also that you should compete with other applicants from other countries in the determined region. Unfortunately, the confirmation letter from Professor  Dr.Dr. Hess-Luettich of the University of Bern dated 8 October 2003 and 2 reference letters from 2 lecturers of my Alma mater, German Dept., Faculty of Letters, University of Indonesia, (J. Darman, M.A. & Dr. Setiawati Darmojuwono) could not accompany me to Bern, since I didn't get the scholarship.
