Is It A Gay?

It was a calm evening in the nice apartment of my pupil Krishna (not the real name). His house maid was cooking as we discussed about the nouns.

The young man who comes from Hyderabad, India, read the book carefully. He enjoyed in finding the German names of the pictures. There are some pictures of objects which are usually available in a class room. Board, sponge, paper, pencil, course book, bag, etc..

I told Krishna that nouns in German have an article and their first alphabet is written in capital. So: board = die Tafel, sponge = der Schwamm, paper = das Papier, pencil = der Bleistift, course book = das Kursbuch, bag = die Tasche, etc.. In English there is only one article and no need to be written in capital. So: the board, the sponge, the paper, the pencil, the course book, the bag, etc..

Aarau Exterior View
Krishna nodded as a sign that he understood. He loves German because he has a best friend in Switzerland, who is like a sister for him and he had a sweet memory with a nice Swiss girl in a tunnel, who was so kind in helping him to find the direction. :-) It was in the Schaffhausen railway station. Yes, Krishna has got lost as he wanted to go to Aarau, the capital of the Canton / State of Aargau in Switzerland. Therefore he thought that it would be great if he can speak German. :-)

Then Krishna should practice to read all nouns including the articles of those nouns. First he listened to the recording, and then repeated after it. There is word accent in German. Krishna should mark the syllable, which is stressed.

I asked Krishna to remember that all original articles of the nouns are in nominative. This is one case in the German grammar. The articles of the nouns can change if the nouns are in other cases like accusative, dative and genitive. Therefore he should be careful.

Krishna nodded as a sign that he understood.

Further I asked him to pay attention again to the articles of the nouns, because it is related to the cases. I told him that nouns in German have 3 types of gender. He was surprised. :-) I mentioned them: feminine, masculine, ... . Then I asked him, “Do you know the third?” The engineer of electricity answered doubtfully, “Is it a gay?” :-)

No, Krishna. It is neutral. :-)

The article of feminine nouns: die, masculine nouns: der, neutral nouns: das. They are all in nominative.

In accusative the articles will be: die (feminine), den (masculine), das (neutral).

In dative they will be: der (feminine), dem (masculine), dem (neutral).

In genitive they will be: der (feminine), des (masculine), des (neutral).

So from the above examples it means: bag and board are feminine, pencil and sponge are masculine, course book and paper are neutral.

Well, the maid has finished the cooking and the dinner for Krishna was ready. But he must wait until the German course is finish and I go home. :-)

Großer Gott, wir loben dich;
Herr, wir preisen deine Stärke.
Vor dir neigt die Erde sich
und bewundert deine Werke.
Wie du warst vor aller Zeit,
so bleibst du in Ewigkeit.

Masalah Terjemahan: Lagu “Großer Gott, Wir Loben Dich” dari Kidung Jemaat No. 5

Großer Gott, wir loben dich;
Herr, wir preisen deine Stärke.
Vor dir neigt die Erde sich
und bewundert deine Werke.
Wie du warst vor aller Zeit,
so bleibst du in Ewigkeit.

Saya memiliki sebuah buku lagu Gereja Negara Bagian Württemberg “Evangelisches Kirchengesangbuch” (Stuttgart: Verlag des Evangelischen Gesangbuchs, 1986). Sayangnya lagu “Großer Gott, Wir Loben Dich” ini tidak ada di buku ini. Untungnya saya masih menyimpan lembaran kertas dari Salzhausen. :-)

Di balik buku lagu gereja Negara Bagian Württemberg ini ada kisah yang sangat menyenangkan. Semoga saya bisa menulis tentang itu. :-)

Translation Problems: The Song “Großer Gott, Wir Loben Dich” from Kidung Jemaat No. 5

It is always interesting to find the original text of a translated song, because then I can compare them. Of course I have respect to the translator, who has tried diligently to get the best result of the translation. I don’t want to criticize or judge the translation. Especially this is a song. It is really not easy to translate a song. By doing translation you are responsible to convey the message from the author to the readers, whose language is different from the author’s language. Translation is the bridge which connects an author to those readers. However, in translating a song you have additional works like you should think of the melody and the rhyme.

Not only grammatical problems which need language skills to solve them in translating there will be some other problems, because there are some factors which influence. For example a translator needs to know things related to the author in regard to understand her / him such as her or his background, the political situation of the country where the author lives or has lived, the culture , the social life, etc.. Therefore it is not correct if you translate a text from a translation. In this case this song is in German, maybe the English translation is available, and you want to translate the song into Indonesian language, so you should translate it from German, not from the English translation.

Here I want to expose the German Church song “Großer Gott, Wir Loben Dich”. This song is currently ringing in my ears. :-) I just want to find the difference between the original text and the translation.

Großer Gott, wir loben dich;
Herr, wir preisen deine Stärke.
Vor dir neigt die Erde sich
und bewundert deine Werke.
Wie du warst vor aller Zeit,
so bleibst du in Ewigkeit.

I got the text from the paper we used in a family worship in St. Johannes church, Salzhausen, Germany on 11 August 1996. This song should be from an ecclesiastical hymnbook. Its number is 331. Possibly the hymnbook is the book which is used by St. Johannes church. Maybe it is hymnbook of state church of Niedersachsen. I guess each state church in Germany has its own hymnbook. Hm, I must ask my German friends. :-)

I have an ecclesiastical hymnbook of state church of Württemberg “Evangelisches Kirchengesangbuch” (Stuttgart: Verlag des Evangelischen Gesangbuchs, 1986). Unfortunately this song “Großer Gott, Wir Loben Dich” is not found in this hymnbook. Luckily I still keep the paper from Salzhausen. :-)

Behind the hymnbook of state church of Württemberg there was a very nice story. Hopefully I can make it to write about it. :-)

Hurra, Ich Bin in Deutschland

Hurray, I am in Germany

My ex pupil, Ichel, remembers her stay in Germany. This graduate from Swiss German University, Serpong, has spent a practical semester at Fachhochschule Südwestfalen, Soest. Soest is located approximately 40 minutes long from Dortmund.

She and her friends landed in a February in Germany. It rained as they arrived in the airport. It was very cold and also windy. Her first days in Germany were very amazing for her.

Stay in Germany

At the beginning Ichel and a friend rented an apartment (in a Holiday apartment) in Soest. The monthly hire charge was €750. It was furnished and there was a kitchen. They also got blankets. The price was including refuse collection fee, etc.. Once in a week the bedroom was cleansed. But Ichel & her friend themselves must cleanse the kitchen.

Afterwards Ichel stayed in Holzminden, approximate 1,5 hour long from Hannover. The house, in which she stayed, consisted of 3 storeys. The owner was on the ground floor. On the 1st floor that was someone else. Ichel and her friends, German students, were on the 2nd floor. There were 4 flats and Ichel had her own flat.

Ichel has already sought the flat from Indonesia before. She found advertisement in internet. But one may rent it, only if one meets the landlord. She was lucky, because she didn’t need to pay the deposit from Indonesia before. She found there were some landlords who demand the deposit before.  Therefore one must transfer the money from Indonesia.
