Has Hitler Been to Karimunjawa Island in Indonesia?

It was in the afternoon and I wanted to wash the car. But because the water was not enough for washing, I must wait. Then I watched the television.

It was very interesting and surprising. The television program showed a report about Hitler’s submarines, which were found in Java Sea, Indonesia.

According to the maritime archaeologist from the Indonesian National Archaeology Centre the German submarine which belonged to Nazi was found 60 miles away from Karimunjawa Island, Central Java. A team from Archaeology Centre, which consists of 16 persons, sailed on 8th November 2013 night on Java Sea to find the submarine. This sail has taken 4 days 3 nights.

After the team has found the potential point of the submarine, they dived immediately. They entered into the submarine and found plates, glasses, diving goggles and shoes. A small plate with logo of the German Nazi was the first thing they found. Indeed they were in the kitchen of that submarine.

Shinatria Adhityatama, the maritime archaeologist, said, that there should be many German Nazi's war ships, which sank in Indonesian seas. Not only the submarine which was just found in the Java Sea. According to him there are two German war ships, which sank in the Java Sea. One ship is northern of Bali Island, the other is in Pangandaran, around West Java.

Not only the discovery of the Indonesian National Archaeology Centre, but also the discovery of the Frog Unit of the Indonesian Navy was reported by the television station RTV.

The unit was led by Major Yudo Ponco Ari and dived from 30th Mai until 1st June 2014 in Karimunjawa Sea. They found perfume bottles, wine bottles and cutleries, also human skulls.

The major could not say, whether it supposed to be the same ship, with the one, which was found before by the National Archaeology Centre. The soldier only suspected that the ship is a submarine. However it was not yet clear, whether it is U-Boot 183 or 168. It could be identified from the cutleries and the German Navy’s kits that the ship was a submarine. A plate with the logo “Kriegsmarine” (navy) was found. Further the major said, that according to the history there were 2 submarines, which sank in the Java Sea.

U-Boot 168 was built in 1941 by a company based in Bremen named Deutscher Schiff- und Maschinenbau AG. On Hitler’s behalf U-Boot 168 and U-Boot 183 were in charge in Asia Pacific. They patrolled in this region. In two years of service they have sunk three war ships of the Allies and destroyed one war ship.

Whether Hitler has actually landed in Batavia (Jakarta) or for example in Surabaya, while his ships were in Indonesia, unfortunately the television station didn’t give any information. ;-)

On October 6th , 1944, according to the book which was written by Paul Kemp, U-168, which was led by Lieutenant Helmut Pich, was on the way from Batavia (Jakarta) to Surabaya. Then it was detected by the Dutch submarine Zwaardvisch. After that this submarine has just shot its enemy with 6 torpedoes from the distance of 900 yard. 23 soldiers died, 27 were caught. U-168 just appeared, as it was shot.

That’s all. In the meantime I had already enough water to wash the car. So, I must start. :-)

Meine Freunde in Deutschland kommentieren:

Marita in Hanstedt

Sepertinya Akan Ada Badai

Orang A: Ich glaube, es kommt ein Sturm. (Menurut saya akan ada badai)
Orang B: Ach, das glaube ich nicht. Es bleibt schön. (Ah, saya rasa tidak. Cuaca tetap bagus)

Sayangnya saya benar-benar tidak bisa menolongmu. Yang jelas keduanya bisa saja.

Storm Might Come

I find this dialogue in a course book:
Person A: Ich glaube, es kommt ein Sturm. (I think that storm might come)
Person B: Ach, das glaube ich nicht. Es bleibt schön. (Oh, I don’t think so, it remains fine)

It is only a picture, has nothing to do with the theme of the chapter, therefore there is no further explanation. In that picture 2 people have a conversation like above mentioned.

The sentence “Es kommt ein Sturm” is interesting. It is not clear, what the subject is: es or ein Sturm. Both are possible. But some questions will arise after that.

If “es” is the subject, then “ein Sturm” should be in Akkusativ, shouldn’t it? The sentence should be like this: Es kommt einen Sturm. The noun “Sturm” is masculine.

If “ein Sturm” is the subject, why is “es” still there? People can of course immediately build the sentence “Ein Sturm kommt” , can’t they?

There is pronoun “es”, which is special for wheater. But as far as I know this pronoun “es” is always in Nominativ: es schneit, es regnet, es ist kalt, es ist bewölkt, es ist sonnig, es ist heiss, es ist windig.

I conclude that the subject is “ein Sturm”. Then I asked my friends in Germany (I just consider them as friends), why the sentence is built so “Es kommt ein Sturm”, not “Ein Sturm kommt” ?

My friends in Germany comment:

Marita in Hanstedt
Oh, oh, you asked things, about which I never worried.
Both are possible ! We Germans say it so or so, just like we are thinking.
Least number of us has studied German. :) :)

Unfortunately I really cannot help you. Both are just possible.

Dr. Dr. Dr. h.c. Ernest W.B.

Folgendes Zitat seiner ersten email vom 8. Oktober 2003:

Dua Jam Bersama Prof. Hess-Luettich

Universitas Bern

Saya senang sekali.

Oktober 2003:

Two Hours with Prof. Hess-Luettich

University of Berne
I was reading while waiting for the professor in the lobby. He was still on the way.

Several times later some people just came into the lobby. It was a European man among them. He saw me and I also saw him. Then he smiled at me and mentioned my name. Therefore I knew that he was the professor, whom I was waiting for. I thought it nice, that the professor could recognize me right away. We haven’t met each other yet before. :-)

I stood up, shook hands with the professor. We talked shortly. Then he invited me for dinner. Oh, he was so nice. I didn’t expect it. We went to the restaurant right beside the lobby.

We talked about some interesting themes. The professor gave me a bottle of kayu putih oil, which comes from Buru Island. (kayu = wood, putih = white, so kayu putih = white wood. But, there must be a Latin name for this plant.) I was pleased so much about the oil. It was a pleasant evening, but time went on, sometime one must stop. We must go on our own life. The professor must fly to India on the next day where he also would give lectures. Again a long flight! The professor was only shortly in Jakarta due to stopover. He had given lectures before in 2 cities in Indonesia.

I know Prof. em Dr. Dr. Dr. h.c Ernest W.B. Heß-Lüttich since 2003. I would apply for a scholarship from Switzerland at that time and I needed a confirmation of acceptance from a recognized university in Switzerland. I got the confirmation of acceptance from Prof. Hess-Luettich, German Department, University of Berne. Thanks to his confirmation of acceptance I could apply for the scholarship.
