Where Is the Visa for My Study? Do It Quickly Please!

A friend, Yan (not the real name), who now studies mechanical engineering at the University of Duisburg Essen told me about his experience in applying student visa in the German Embassy Jakarta.

Yan got the information that visa application will take 6 until 8 weeks. The study for winter semester in Duisburg started in the middle October 2012. Since the German Embassy could not tell Yan, when the visa exactly would be finish, he didn't want to buy the flight ticket for middle October. Then he booked the flight to Duisburg for beginning November.

However Yan didn't want to start the study very late. Therefore he didn't want just to wait until the German Embassy contacts him. If his visa would take until 8 weeks he would lose time and also money due to ticket cancellation.

After considering the lost that could happen, he "chased" the German Embassy. It supposed to be more that 1x that Yan went to the German Embassy asking his student visa. He was so excited as he finally got the visa in 6 weeks.

On the other side my student Aldo, who also wanted to study at the University of Duisburg Essen (see He Lies!) hasn't got his student visa at that time. He submitted the documents on September 11th.. Until Yan left for Germany on November 6th., Aldo still hasn't got the visa. He has even already submitted his documents on September 6th.. However the German Embassy sent him home just because 1 copy of a document was not available.

Actually it was not his mistake. According to Aldo it is written on the German Embassy's website, that that document only needs 1 copy.

However it depends on the clerk who is currently in charge. Aldo's friend had before a similar experience: one copy was missing. However the clerk who was in charge is a nice person. The clerk got Aldo's friend copied the document at the German Embassy. The process was then finish on that day. He didn't need to come back again to the German Embassy.

Finally Aldo got his visa around November 20th. (2 months 9 days! Later than what the German Embassy has promised) and went to Duisburg around November 28th.. Imagine the lateness! The study has started in middle October. But Yan, submitted the documents on September 12th. to the German Embassy and the visa was finish on October 25th.

On Tuesday, November 6th. 2012 at midnight Yan already sat on the Emirates plane which took him to Duisburg. It is difficult to describe his feeling. He was so glad that he will go to the dream land of his study, but at the same time he was so sad since he had to leave his parent and one of his parent was currently sick. But, that is life.

One week later Yan updated me that he arrived safely in Duisburg and he rents an apartment in Muelheim. The University of Duisburg Essen has 2 campuses. The one is in Essen, on Universitaetsstr.2, 45141 Essen and the other is in Duisburg, on Forsthausweg 2, 47057 Duisburg. The Faculty of Engineering is in Duisburg. Muelheim is a neighbor city, which is the closest to Duisburg.

Yan started the study good although it was late for almost 3 weeks. Good luck, Yan.

Sometimes it is also necessary, like Yan, to be encouraged to push bureaucracy, which can disadvantage if you just don't do that.
